We lift each other.

Extended Community

When NaNoWriMo—the organization—shuttered their doors, many of us within the NaNoWriMo community felt lost... fractured. Some of us went on carrying the tradition of the November novel writing challenge into a new era, some continued in a more informal manner, and some chose to fade into the woodwork.

I had the pleasure of talking with Chris Baty, the creator and founder of NaNoWriMo (both the organization and the challenge) this week. Not only did he and several other former MLs create NaNo2.0, but he is also trying to "cobble together" some of us former MLs who have continued on; not to go back to the regional structure that the original NaNoWriMo organization had, but to foster community, a space to share ideas, and—most importantly, in my personal opinion—to help lift each other up. Every person, every writer, every former ML has something to share, just as every person, every writer, every former ML and beyond can use help in some fashion. This give and take is a large part of what not only made NaNoWriMo so special, but what makes and encourages a strong community.

With this in mind, we want to provide a space to extend our community to other writing groups, whether local to Denver or not and whether formerly related to NaNoWriMo or not. The NaNoWriMo.ca site has compiled a fantastic list of writing communities across the globe and we don't feel the need to duplicate that effort.
